Combining features of ancient Roman and Byzantine buildings and other local traditions, Romanesque architecture is known by its massive quality, thick walls, round arches, sturdy pillars, barrel vaults, large towers and decorative arcading.

So winter the dark at the end of the tunnel.
Coming.
Summer passing into oblivion.

This the background, the rationale, the catalyst for our warm greeting of the mild, lovely days of the early fall, and there  are many lovely days, even if we realize evening temperatures drop precipitously.
Even if we understand that these days, mere gleanings from summer’s harvest now past, these lovely days are a temporary buffer against the onset of those most cruel 180 days that mark New England winters.
And we will not mention the awful first forty-five days of spring sent to tantalize, no, torment us, we so eager to embrace warmth after so winter-long deprived of it.

Back to the wonderful first half of the fall, six weeks.
Columbus Day weekend the spiritual climax of that stunningly wonderful season in New England, peak foliage, apple cider, and the like.
Depending, of course, on the particular spot and the weather.

So, find that romantic inn in that small New England town.
Book a table.
Drive slowly along the scenic routes to get there.
Check in.
Make love.
Hang out.
Go down to dinner.
Snuggle.
Wake early to a terrific breakfast.
And head home.

And having so marked the pinnacle of the New England Fall season, we’ll brace ourselves.
It’s coming.

A communication from an older follower: a week-long trip to Mexico impending; a dinner for 24, tonight, hiking, helping friends, weathering extreme weather, all pointing to her redefinition of getting old.

And opposite, a younger writer grappling with the realization that she has a great deal to offer if she realizes her talents; understands that a narrative of her teen-aged years may help teenagers steady themselves as waves of emotions threaten to engulf them.

Portsmouth Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, is an Anglican cathedral church in Portsmouth, England.

It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Portsmouth and the seat of the bishop of Portsmouth.

The cruciform building was constructed in the Romanesque style on land donated by Norman lord Jean de Gisors in the 1180s and dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket, who was martyred around ten years earlier.
It was made a cathedral upon the establishment of the Diocese of Portsmouth, which was split from the Diocese of Winchester in 1927, after which it was extended in a "Neo-Byzantine" style by Charles Nicholson.

The lead picture shows the cathedral's chancel, which, along with the transepts, are the only remaining sections of the original medieval building.

The baptismal font, made to a ninth-century Greek design, is placed in the center.
