Commentary
Monday, May 27, 2019
Sitting by Lake Washington, the toddler waves breaking gently on the not-quite-a-shore.
Temperature a palatable 68* with skies shielded by an overcast that the sun frequently breaks through, adding welcome warmth to my warmth-deprived body.
Five minutes before I should take a seat in the small theatre hosting a dance recital in which my lovely granddaughter, Grace, will be participating.
The reunion/celebration of life event has unfolded brilliantly giving us memories of each other that will buoy us through moments when we might be unnecessarily grieving.
And in support of facing death head on I offer lyrics by William Schwenck Gilbert:
Is life a boon?
If so, it must befall
That Death, whene'er he call,
Must call too soon.
Though fourscore years he give
Yet one would pray to live
Another moon!
What kind of plaint have I,
Who perish in July?
I might have had to die
Perchance in June!
Is life a thorn?
Then count it not a whit!
Man is well done with it;
Soon as he's born
He should all means essay
To put the plague away;
And I, war-worn,
Poor captured fugitive,
My life most gladly give -
I might have had to live
Another morn!

Who was Elmore Leonard?

Chuckle of the Day:
Monday, May 27, 2019
A bus full of married men going on a picnic crashed with no survivors.
Each of their wives cried for many days.
After a week, one after the other stopped crying.
Except for one wife who continued on and on inconsolably.
When asked, she broke down and cried out, "My husband missed the bus."

Elmore John Leonard Jr. (October 11, 1925 – August 20, 2013) was an American novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter. His earliest novels, published in the 1950s, were Westerns, but he went on to specialize in crime fiction and suspense thrillers, many of which have been adapted into motion pictures.
Among his best-known works are Get Shorty, Out of Sight, Swag, Hombre, Mr. Majestyk, and Rum Punch (adapted as the film Jackie Brown). Leonard's writings include short stories that became the films 3:10 to Yuma and The Tall T, as well as the FX television series Justified.
