Let’s return now to our thirty-day Existential Auto Trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Before we fix a departure date we must get Kat into her new digs on Friday, August 31, 2018.
She, a returning sophomore at Swarthmore.
Probably have Friday night dinner there, at Swart.
She’s becoming an independent woman very quickly.
Time flies when you’re having fun.
So, looking at the Swarthmore weekend.
Labor Day weekend.
Travel sluggish.
How to avoid?
Leave Wednesday, not Thursday, the heavy travel day.
Have been invited to stay at friends’ home for the time in Penn.
How generous and appealing.
So like them.
Invitation accepted.
Kat and I both will stay with our friends on Wed and Thurs evenings.
For me, the addition of Friday night, with a promise to vacate early Sat morning (not necessary from hosts’ view.)
Head out to Boston before breakfast.
Arrive Saturday afternoon.
Then to set up for my Existential Auto Trip, now scheduled for launch on Tuesday, day after Labor Day, Sept 4, 2018.
To recap the itinerary:
We arrive at friends’ mid-afternoon on Wednesday and head for Philly central.
Perhaps a café.
A bit of walking around after the long car ride.
Wednesday evening, Kat and I will host a dinner @ Talulah’s Garden downtown Philadelphia @ 6.30p.
Maybe our Philly hosts will reserve a table outside.
A hot item in that city.
We’ll spend Thursday in Philadelphia, including a trip to the Museum there.
Hoping to see some Eakins.
Wondering if either or both of our hosts will join us for all or part of the day in Philadelphia.
If we can persuade our talented friend to cook a dinner for us, Thursday seems like a good time.
Friday, immediately after breakfast, Kat and I will Swarth the whole day.
Get her moved in.
Stay there with her for our last dinner of summer.
Which restaurant undecided yet.
Return to friends’ about 9.30p
Leave early on Saturday morning.
Today is Friday, June 15, 2018
Good morning, my friends.
This is my sixty-ninth consecutive daily posting:
The posting a very short ending of the “Packing” for the 30-day Existential Auto Trip.
It’s 5.54am
Today is cool and a bit wet.
On TV: “Time Bandits,” a 1981 British fantasy film co-written, produced, and directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Sean Connery, John Cleese, Shelley Duvall, Ralph Richardson, Katherine Helmond, Ian Holm, Michael Palin, Peter Vaughn, and David Warner.
Gilliam has referred to Time Bandits as the first in his "Trilogy of Imagination", followed by Brazil (1985) and ending with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988).[3] All are about the "craziness of our awkwardly ordered society and the desire to escape it through whatever means possible."[3] All three films focus on these struggles and attempts to escape them through imagination: Time Bandits through the eyes of a child, Brazil through the eyes of a man in his thirties, and Munchausen through the eyes of an elderly man.
As usual: thank you, Wikipedia.
I’m at my desk.
Dinner is Broiled Slow-Roasted Baby Back Ribs. In fact, I just took them out of the 200* oven and set them on the kitchen counter to wait until I’m ready to finish them later today. A simple broil against a high-heat that will penetrate to the center of the ribs.
Web Tweaks
Have my appointment at Microsoft this morning.
Now, a weekly appointment, me having graduated from bi-weekly.
Will report tomorrow on changes to the blog or the website.
Today’s Post
Packing Beyond the Three Bags
So we’ve packed our waist pouch or pocketbook, the intimate bag that never leaves us; we’ve packed our daily backpack that contains the few items we want to carry around town while we sightsee; and we’ve packed our heavy-duty backpack that is going to carry what we need for the overnight.
We may need other things in our room.
I know that I like to take my printer. It doesn’t take much space. It sits quietly in the trunk until we arrive at our motel. And then I use a hotel cart to carry it in and out. So it’s no trouble at all and it helps me to think more clearly when I print out a fresh copy to tomorrow’s to do list.
I usually opt for better restaurants and so need clothes that I don’t want to fold up: dress slacks, sports jacket, dress shoes, and a shirt and tie.
These I hang up on the hooks provided by the rear passenger windows and then carry them into the hotel room using a hotel cart.
Finally, for packing, we need to outfit the empty front passenger seat for the benefit of the driver: a water bottle, sunglasses, music, audio books, fruit, an emergency urine bottle, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and a comb.
Now let’s take a brief look at the trunk and backseat of the car. Besides the goods mentioned above, we have to pack the backups for the backpacks, specifically the heavy-duty backpack.
My strong preference is to pack the goods in small boxes or reusable supermarket bags dedicated to one item or type of item.
